Charlottesville, VA – Now in its ninth season of competing, the Virginia women’s golf team achieved its highest regular-season national ranking this week when Golfstat updated its rankings. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 2, trailing only UCLA.
Virginia jumped up in the poll after a third-place finish to start the season at the Mason Rudolph/Fall Preview. The 18-team field included the top 13-ranked teams at the time.
Virginia is coming off a best-ever fourth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships. The Cavaliers finished the season ranked No. 5 by Golfstat. In 2009 Virginia ended the season ranked No. 4 by Golfstat.
“It is nice and exciting for the team to be ranked that high based on a very good showing at the Fall Preview,” said Virginia coach Kim Lewellen. “I think the players over the years have done an incredible job of establishing Virginia as one of the top programs in the country. That said, it is early in the season and we have a lot of golf to play to make it back to the NCAAs. That’s our focus.”
