UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Sophomore Rachel Naurath was a double event winner in the 500 freestyle and 200 butterfly and junior Lauren Perdue took top honors in the 100 freestyle as the Virginia swimming and diving teams began competition Friday vs. Big Ten foes Penn State and Indiana. The meet is being held on Penn State’s campus and concludes Saturday.

The women’s 400 medley relay team capped the first day with a first-place performance, clocking a winning time of 3:42.79, a NCAA ‘B’ standard. Charlotte Clarke, Christine Olson, Naurath and Perdue teamed up to earn the win for the Cavaliers.

Virginia’s 200 freestyle relay team of Perdue, Emily Lloyd, Meredith Cavalier and Kelly Flynn finished second behind Penn State with a NCAA ‘B’ time of 1:32.69.

Naurath clocked a winning ‘B’ time of 4:46.46 in the 500 freestyle. Teammates Kelly Offutt (4:52.00) and Caroline Kenney (4:53.20) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Naurath went on to take first place honors in the 200 butterfly, clocking a time of 1:59.91, another NCAA ‘B’ mark. Freshmen Alison Haulsee (2:01.18) was fourth and Sarah White (2:02.56) took fifth.

Perdue, swimming in her first meet of the season, won the 100 freestyle in a ‘B’ time of 49.80. Lloyd followed in fifth (51.40) and Cavalier was sixth (51.51).

Kenney went on to place second for the Cavaliers in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:59.75. Clarke finished fourth (2:00.29) and Stewart tied for sixth (2:02.01).

White placed fifth (2:03.65) and Stewart was sixth (2:04.058) in the 200 IM. Olson took fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.62) and Flynn finished fifth (1:04.69).

The men’s 200 freestyle relay team of Tom Barrett, Peter Geissinger, Matt Murray and Jacob Pearce placed third with a time of 1:23.64. The 400 medley relay team also took third with a time of 3:22.13; Murray, Taylor Grey, Geissinger and Barrett swam for UVa.

Senior Briggy Imbriglia placed second on the 3-meter board for the Cavaliers with a score of 349.65. Teammate JB Kolod was fourth overall with a mark of 344.80.

Sophomore Jan Daniec also recorded a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:25.10, a NCAA ‘B’ mark, while Bradley Phillips was third (4:29.59). Geissinger was second in the 100 freestyle (46.06) and Barrett took third (46.17).

Freshman David Ingraham finished third in the 200 butterfly (1:50.81) and Daniec went on to place fifth (1:52.88). Grey was fifth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.87 while David Ingraham was sixth in 1:52.95.

Grey also took third in the 100 breaststroke in 56.94 and Tom Casey was fourth, clocking a time of 57.07. Brady Fox also recorded a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke with a mark of 1:49.32.

No team results were made available Friday.

Virginia concludes competition against Penn State and Indiana at 11 a.m. Saturday.
