CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –
Virginia men’s lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia announced his team’s schedule for the 2012 season Friday. UVa, winner of the 2011 NCAA title, boasts a schedule which features seven games against teams that saw postseason action in last year’s NCAA Championship, including two teams Virginia defeated on the way to the title. Starsia announces his schedule on the heels of Inside Lacrosse‘s Face-Off Yearbook ranking UVa No. 1 in its preseason poll.

“Even though this announcement corresponds with the start of winter, it always feels as if the release of our schedule is a clear signal of the spring season ahead,” said Starsia.

The Cavaliers’ defense of the NCAA title commences on Feb. 18 when UVa travels to Philadelphia to play Drexel, the 11th year in a row Virginia has started its season against the Dragons. Virginia opens its home slate inside the confines of Klöckner Stadium on Feb. 21 against VMI. The Cavaliers conclude the two-game home stand on Feb. 25 against Stony Brook.

Virginia hits the road on Feb. 28 as it travels to Mount St. Mary’s. UVa returns home on March 4 when the Syracuse Orange come to Charlottesville. The Cavaliers turn right around two days later to host former UVa All-American defenseman Ryan Curtis’ Vermont squad on March 6.

UVa returns to Baltimore, the scene of its 2011 NCAA title win, for Inside Lacrosse‘s Face-Off Classic, an annual event the Cavaliers appeared in the first two years it was held. Virginia will face 2011 quarterfinalist Cornell as part of a lacrosse triple-header contested at M&T Bank Stadium on March 10.

The Cavaliers make their first trip to Columbus since 2000 to play Ohio State on March 17, the sixth all-time meeting in a series that began in 1968, but went on hiatus until 1999.

Virginia will then return home for a March 24 meeting with Johns Hopkins for the Doyle Smith Cup. The contest with the Blue Jays is the 65th season in a row the teams have played each other.

Virginia opens ACC play at Maryland on March 31. UVa travels a week later to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina on April 7.

ACC play concludes on April 13 when the Cavaliers host Duke at Klöckner Stadium. The following weekend Virginia will host the 2011 ACC Championship on April 20 and April 22. The tournament returns to Charlottesville for the first time since 2008.

Virginia will conclude the regular season portion of its schedule April 27 in Inside Lacrosse‘s inaugural Mile High Classic against Pennsylvania. The previously announced game will be the first contest of a doubleheader event held at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, located in Denver, Colo. The series with the Quakers is one of UVa’s oldest in lacrosse, beginning in 1929. The 2012 game marks the first time the series has been played outside of Charlottesville.

The NCAA Championship begins May 12-13 at home sites, followed by the quarterfinals at either Navy (South) on May 19 or Drexel (North) on May 20. Drexel will host the NCAA Quarterfinals at PPL Park in Philadelphia, Pa.

The Final Four returns to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., site of the event in 2008 and 2009. The third Final Four to be held at the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots kicks off with the semifinals on May 26, followed by the finals on May 28.

“We are proud to find ourselves atop the poll in Inside Lacrosse‘s Face-Off Yearbook,” said Starsia. “We are proud to be playing the next five teams in the poll, seven of the 2011 NCAA teams overall and to be included in both the Face-Off and Mile High Classics.”

A list of televised contests will be announced at a later date.
