CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s basketball team continues a season-long five-game homestand on Tuesday night when it hosts in-state rival James Madison. Tip-off at John Paul Jones Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast over the airwaves on WINA 1070 AM in the Charlottesville area. That broadcast, along with live statistics, can be accessed at VirginiaSports.com.

Virginia improved to 9-2 overall and 6-0 at home this season with a 92-43 victory over Radford on Sunday (Dec. 18). The Cavaliers shot 50.8 percent from the field (31-for-61) and forced 31 Highlander turnovers.

Virginia is limiting opponents to 50.7 points per game (second in the ACC and tied for 15th nationally) and has held six-consecutive opponents to less than 60 points (Hawaii, California, Indiana, Richmond, Liberty, Radford).

Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) leads the ‘Hoos in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game. Moorer is eyeing 1,000 points for her career, as she is the active leader on the team in that category with 910 points in 108 games.

Sophomore Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) ranks second on the team at 10.0 points per game and leads the squad with 27 steals.

Senior forward Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) pulled down her 500th career rebound on Dec. 7 vs. Liberty and leads the Cavaliers in that category by averaging 6.5 rebounds per game.

James Madison is 7-1 and defeated Central Connecticut State, 71-64, in its last outing (Dec. 18). Tarik Hislop averages 16.0 points per game to lead the Dukes offensively, followed by Jasmine Gill at 12.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Three James Madison starters – Kirby Burkholder, Lauren Whitehurst and Nikki Newman – average more than seven rebounds per game.

JMU head coach Kenny Brooks is in his 10th season and has compiled a 205-88 career record in Harrisonburg.

The Cavaliers lead the all-time series with James Madison, 13-6, but the Dukes have been victorious in the last two meetings. On Dec. 2010 in Harrisonburg, then-senior Dawn Evans poured in 42 points and JMU rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to earn a 82-80 win. The year before in Charlottesville, the Dukes upset then-No. 14 Virginia, 75-73, on Dec. 6.

In games played in Charlottesville, UVa leads the series, 8-2.

Following Tuesday’s game, the Cavaliers are back in action when they host the Marriott Cavalier Classic on Dec. 28 and 29 at John Paul Jones Arena.
