Training Trip Blog - Martha Kuzzy - Jan. 9
The Virginia rowing team takes an annual training trip to Florida in preparation for the spring season. This year, a different senior will check in each day with VirginiaSports.com to give insight to how the trip is going. Monday’s (Jan. 9) entry is from Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.).
We rose early this morning for a 7 a.m. practice, however the coaches decided it was too foggy to row after our quick warm up jog and core. Instead, we jumped right into our rotations of the run or circuit. Thankfully having done the circuit yesterday and feeling the results upon waking this morning, I was able to crank some tunes and run for thirty minutes. Immediately after our return, we gathered in our lineups and set out in a cluster of 6 fours and an eight.
It was an interesting practice, a little like ‘herding cattle’ as the coaches say. We lined up 6 boats across to do a series of longer and shorter pieces, keeping the coxswains on their toes amidst the plethora of speedboats, launches and shells. After pulling into the dock around 11, arms shaking and hands stinging, it was deemed a long, productive morning.
Having done the run and circuit shifts already, we were able to relax longer, surrounded by gallons of chocolate milk and consuming multiple breakfasts and lunches. Luckily this afternoon, we were split into two shifts to do technical work, with an additional 30 minutes of choice cardio.
We all look forward to our one afternoon off tomorrow where groups will head to Daytona beach or just enjoy a relaxing afternoon here at good ole’ Hontoon.
