CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both earned a dual meet victory over Pitt Saturday at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. The 11th-ranked Cavalier women (7-0) defeated the Panthers 159-133 while the No. 15 men (4-3) were victorious 162-130.

Sophomore Jan Daniec (500 freestyle, 1000 freestyle), sophomore Taylor Grey (100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke) and senior Briggy Imbriglia (1-meter, 3-meter diving) paced the men with two individual wins apiece.

Leading the way for the Virginia women was Charlotte Clarke (100 backstroke, 100 butterfly) and Meredith Cavalier (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle), who also both won two individual events.

“Everybody was excited to finally have the opportunity to swim in our home pool,” Virginia head coach Mark Bernardino said. “We had some nice results and performances that will help us as a coaching staff make decisions when it comes time to select our ACC travel squad. We diversified with a lot of the kids in their events today and tried to move them around and find what is normally their third best event. We saw some good things.”

The men’s 200 medley relay team of Jack Murfee, Grey, Peter Geissinger and Tom Barrett started things off with a win in the first event of the meet, finishing in a time of 1:30.98.

The Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in three freestyle events. Daniec led a sweep in both the 1000 freestyle (9:16.80) and 500 freestyle (4:29.31). Nathan Vredeveld was second in the 1000 freestyle (9:31.61) followed by Serge Gould (9:35.85). Parker Camp (4:31.48) placed second behind Daniec in the 500 freestyle while Jonathan Buerger took third (4:39.63).

The duo of Imbriglia and freshman JB Kolod went 1-2 on both diving events. Imbriglia won the 3-meter with a score of 341.90 and took the 1-meter with a mark of 348.90. Kolod was second on both the 3-meter (338.25) and 1-meter (340.95) events. Both 3-meter scores were exhibitioned and did not count toward the team score.

Nick Montes de Oca touched first in the 200 individual medley (1:52.50), a race that was exhibitioned, and placed second behind Grey in both breaststroke events. He clocked a time of 57.43 in the 100 breaststroke and touched in 2:03.60 in the 200 breaststroke.

Other event winners for the Cavalier men included Matt Houser in the 200 butterfly (1:51.05), Geissinger in the 50 freestyle (21.01) and Barrett in the 100 freestyle (45.39).

“Nick Montes de Oca had a very nice day,” Bernardino continued. “Taylor Grey has been consistently strong for us all year and the same goes for Jan Daniec, who had some really powerful distance races. I was happy with Tom Barrett; he has really developed into an outstanding 100 and 200 freestyler and that will help our relays at the conference meet.”

Rachel Naurath’s win the 200 butterfly earned her a NCAA ‘B’ mark as she finished with a time of 2:00.17. Clarke also had a ‘B’ cut with her win in the 100 backstroke, touching in 54.78.
