Charlottesville, VA – The 22nd-ranked Virginia men’s golf team finishes off the regular season portion of its schedule this weekend in Tampa, Fla., when the Cavaliers compete in the Gary Koch Invitational at Old Memorial Golf Club.

Virginia defends its title from last year starting Saturday with 36 holes of play. The final round is slated for Sunday.

The Cavalier lineup features Denny McCarthy, Ben Kohles, Ben Rusch, Bruce Woodall and Ji Soo Park. McCarthy was the team’s top finisher in UVa’s last outing. He placed fifth at the Hootie @ Bulls Bay Intercollegiate. He is second on the team with a 72.29 stroke average.

Kohles, who is No. 10 in the latest Golfweek standings, leads the team with a 71.00 stroke average. He has two wins under his belt this spring. Last year he took medalist honors at the Koch Invitational, shooting 9-under 207. The Cavaliers finished nine strokes ahead of runner-up Auburn for the team title. The tournament was held in October of 2010 last season.

This year’s 15-team field includes seven teams ranked in the top 25 of Golfweek’s current standings. The participating teams are No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Auburn, College of Charleston, No. 23 Florida, No. 24 Florida State, No. 10 Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern, Kentucky, No. 15 North Florida, Pacific, South Florida, Toledo, UNC Greensboro and Wake Forest.

Auburn and Kentucky serve as co-hosts for the event. Live scoring will be online at Golfstat.com.
