Greensboro, NC – The 25th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team is in sixth place after the opening round of the ACC Championships taking place at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Virginia shot 19-over 303 on the par-71 course. Duke, ranked ninth, leads the field at 280 followed by defending champion North Carolina (290). The Tar Heels enter the event ranked No. 6 nationally.

Virginia was led by freshman Briana Mao who shot 4-over 75. She is in 16th place after the opening round. Brittany Altomare, Elizabeth Brightwell and Lauren Greenlief are all tied for 19th place at 5-over 76. Portland Rosen is one shot behind that group in 30th place.

Duke’s Alejandra Cangrejo took the first round lead after shooting 2-under 69. She was one of just four players to shoot under par Friday.

The second round of the tournament is schedule to start Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The Cavaliers will tee off at 9:20 a.m. and are paired with Boston College and NC State.
