Cavalier Women's Tennis Posts 4-3 Win at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 15 Virginia women’s tennis team concluded its regular season with a 4-3 win at No. 33 Florida State on Sunday at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) rallied from down a break in the third set of the decisive singles match to give the Cavaliers (16-6, 7-4 ACC) their seventh ACC win of the season, tying the school record. The Seminoles fell to 12-9 overall, 5-6 in the conference.
Florida State took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. The Cavaliers had an early edge as Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) topped Mia Vriens and Leyla Erken 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. The Seminoles drew even as Carolina De Los Santos and Francesca Segarelli downed Li Xi (Kunming, China) and Peretz 8-6 at the No. 3 spot. The match at No. 1 determined the opening point, with Ruth Seaborne and Amy Sargeant defeating Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) 8-6 to give Florida State a 1-0 lead.
The Seminoles doubled their lead early in singles play as Sargeant downed Molly O’Koniewski (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6. The Cavaliers rallied to tie the match at 2-2 with wins at the top two spots. Fraser defeated Seaborne 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 and Hardenbergh topped Erkan 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2. Florida State retook the lead as Segarelli posted a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 over Vierra. Tomljanovic brought Virginia back even at 3-3 as she completed a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Vriens. The match came down to the contest at No. 5, where Peretz rallied from losing a first set tiebreaker to De Los Santos to force a decisive third set. In the final set, De Los Santos led 4-2 before Peretz won the final four games to seal a 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-4 win that gave the Cavaliers the 4-3 victory.
“A lot of credit to both teams today as it was a long, hard-fought match,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “I was impressed with our endurance in hot, tough conditions. It was a great job by a seniors (Lindsey and Emily) to lead us today. They got a win in doubles and then got two big singles wins to start our comeback. It was impressive that bit Hana and Caryssa were able to fight back from dropping the first set to win key matches in tight third sets. The played smart tennis and were able to win a pair of key matches to complete the win. We also seem to be getting closer to full health, which will be a positive for us as we head into the postseason.”
Virginia’s seven ACC wins this season tie the school record, set last season when the Cavaliers also finished league play with a 7-4 record.
The Cavaliers will travel to Cary, N.C. for next week’s ACC Tournament. The tournament will run from April 19-22 at the Cary Tennis Center.
