New London, NC – The No. 20 Virginia men’s golf team is in second place after the opening round of the ACC Championships at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. The Cavaliers shot 12-under 276 and trail only No. 11 Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets took the first round lead after shooting 18-under 270.

Florida State, ranked No. 24, is in third place at 279 while North Carolina is fourth at 282. A total of seven teams managed to break par on the first day of competition.

Virginia was led by the 5-under 67s of Ben Kohles and Ben Rusch. They are tied for fourth place, one shot behind three players who share the lead.

Freshmen Denny McCarthy and Ji Soo Park are tied for 18th place at 1-under 71. Bruce Woodall rounded out the UVa scoring in 34th place with a 2-over 74.

UVa’s first round score was its third best this season and the second best by a Cavalier squad at the ACC Championships. Rusch’s 67 was his lowest round of the year.

The tournament continues Saturday and Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Virginia’s golfers will start play at 11:10 a.m. Saturday and will be paired with Florida State and Georgia Tech. Live scoring is online at Golfstat.com.
