Six Cavaliers Named to VaSID All-State Wrestling Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Six Virginia wrestlers were named to the 2012 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Wrestling Team, as announced by the organization. UVa boasted the most wrestlers of any school on the team.
Virginia’s three ACC champions in 2012 – Matt Snyder (R-Jr., Lewistown, Pa.), Nick Nelson (R-Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Jon Fausey (R-So., Dalmatia, Pa.) – each were named to the first team in their respective classes, while Gus Sako (So., Cleveland, Ohio), Jedd Moore (R-Jr., Mount Vernon, Ohio) and Nick Sulzer (R-Fr., Cleveland, Ohio) each earned second-team acclaim.
The 2012 ACC Champion at 125 pounds, Snyder finished the year with a 24-5 record, including a team-high eight falls. He went 8-0 in duals, including a 5-0 mark in ACC duals. He was the No. 11 national seed at the NCAA Championships and went 2-2 at NCAAs, with both losses coming in narrow decisions to fellow seeded wrestlers.
Nelson earned the ACC crown at 141 pounds with a double-overtime win over All-American Darrius Little of NC State in the championship bout. The No. 7 seed at 141 at the 2012 NCAA Championships, Nelson (27-4) went 2-2 at the event. Nelson finished his UVa career with 91 wins, which is tied for 10th-most in program history.
Fausey claimed the ACC championship at 184 pounds. He was seeded 12th at the 2012 NCAA Championships and reached the round of 12, falling one win shy of All-America status. He posted a 24-5 record, including a 10-0 mark in dual matches and a perfect 5-0 mark in ACC duals. Over half of his wins resulted in bonus points.
Sako was a 2012 NCAA qualifier and notched a 22-8 record in his first year at 149 pounds. He was 7-1 in duals and 3-1 in ACC duals. He also finished second on the team with seven falls. Sako was 2-2 at the 2012 NCAA Championships, including a win over No. 5 seed Ian Miller of Kent State.
Moore posted a 19-7 record at 157 pounds and was nationally ranked for much of the season. He was ranked No. 15 nationally in the final NCAA RPI and No. 23 in the final NCAA Coaches rankings. Moore was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week in January following his win over then-No. 11 Kyle John of Maryland.
Sulzer qualified for the 2012 NCAA Championships after finishing third at the ACC Championships. He went 27-9 on the season, including a 10-2 mark in dual matches. In addition to leading the Cavaliers in wins, he also recorded a team-high 11 major decisions.
