CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (26-24, 8-13 ACC) earned the No. 6 seed in the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship and will face No. 3 seed Georgia Tech in the first game of the event at 12 p.m. Thursday at North Carolina’s Anderson Stadium. The top-seeded Tar Heels are serving as the host school for the tournament.

The Virginia-Georgia Tech contest will be broadcast live on the ACC’s Regional Sports Network. Live statistics will also be linked on VirginiaSports.com.

Virginia has been off for examinations since Tuesday when it defeated George Mason in the regular season finale. The Cavaliers finished on a strong note, winning five of its last six games.

Virginia will meet Georgia Tech (33-21, 12-8 ACC) for the second consecutive year at the ACC Championship. In 2011, Virginia became the first No. 8 seed to upset the top seed with a 6-0 win over the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta. UVa has won four straight against Georgia Tech after earning a sweep in its first series matchup earlier this year.

The winner of the Virginia-Georgia Tech matchup will take on the winner of the No. 2 Florida State vs. No. 7 NC State game, which will be played at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The first semifinal game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday on RSN and the championship game is slated for 4 p.m. Saturday and will be televised on ESPN.
