CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Three Virginia softball players – sophomore Erica Cipolloni, senior Giannina Cipolloni and junior Melanie Mitchell – were placed on the Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team, announced Thursday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Giannina Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.) was selected as a member of the all-region second team for the second consecutive year. A senior outfield, Cipolloni set the Virginia career stolen bases record this season and finishes her career with 89 career steals. Her total of 31 stolen bases this season ranks second on the single season list, only behind her school record mark of 32 set in 2011. Cipolloni hit .286 as a senior and led the Cavlaiers with 46 hits, 25 RBI and eight doubles.

Erica Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.) received her first career all-region honor. She led Virginia at the plate with a .300 average and a team-best nine home runs while contributing 19 RBI and 10 steals. Cipolloni’s on-base percentage of .454 ranks 10th in the single-season records books and her .582 slugging percentage was fourth among ACC hitters this season.

Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) was honored for the second time in her career after being named to the first team as a freshman in 2010. She tied the school record with her 111th career start in the ACC Championship vs. Georgia Tech and ranks among the top-5 in the Virginia record books in career strikeouts (second), innings pitched (third), shutouts (fourth) and wins (fourth). Mitchell’s 1.55 ERA ranked second among conference pitchers and her 278 strikeouts ranked third.

Five different players have earned a total of seven all-region honors under Virginia head coach Eileen Schmidt.
