CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia diving coach Rich MacDonald has announced that three divers – Carl Buergler (Arlington, Va.), Jordan Sacks (Wilmette, Ill.) and Colby Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md.) – will join the Cavalier men’s program in 2012-13.
“Besides adding numbers to our program, this group of divers is very talented,” MacDonald said. “I am excited to watch them compete and push each other everyday. Although there are no published rankings, this is a top-three recruiting class on the men’s side. We are excited to see what the future holds for Virginia diving. Not only are these incoming young men talented but they have great attitudes and personalities. They will work hard in the pool and in the classroom; it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Buergler is a four-time high school All-American out of Washington Lee High School, where he is also ranked No. 1 in his graduating class. Competing for Dominion Diving Club, Buergler was a top-15 finisher on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards at the 2011 Speedo Junior National Championships and was the 2012 East National champion on the 3-meter.
“Carl is one of the top recruits in the country,” MacDonald said. “He is probably one of the most decorated divers to come to Virginia. I have known Carl for years and his work ethic is second-to-none. His leadership will be important with such a young team.”
Sacks is a three-time high school All-American and was the 2012 Illinois state champion on the 1-meter board. He also is a Speedo Junior National qualifier on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, and finished 10th on the 1-meter and 15th on the 3-meter at the 2012 West National Championships this spring.
“Jordan is a very talented diver,” MacDonald said. “He joins our two incoming female divers, Becca Corbett and Katie Warburg, as state champions. He will bring a lot of depth to the program and really push the rest of our divers. He is a consistent diver and very strong on the 1-meter.”
Shinholser, also a Speedo Junior National qualifier, finished seventh on the 1-meter and ninth on the 3-meter at the 2012 East National Championships. His older brother, Logan, was named the 2012 ACC Diver of the Year during his junior season at Virginia Tech. Shinholser will take part in Virginia’s Navy ROTC program when he arrives on Grounds.
“Colby has a great deal of ability,” MacDonald said. “He can spin incredibly fast and he has skills that you just can’t teach. He comes from a tremendously successful diving family. I am really looking forward to working with Colby.”
