OMAHA, Neb. – Day one of the United States Olympic Swimming Trials commenced Monday at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb. Virginia is being represented by 46 swimmers – past, present and future – at the event.

Former Cavalier Matt McLean, the 2011 NCAA champion in the 500-yard freestyle and the 2011 U.S. national champion in the 400-meter freestyle, just missed a return swim in the 400-meter freestyle. He entered the meet as the No. 2 seed and finished ninth overall in a time of 3:49.96, missing a spot in the finals by seven hundredths of a second. The top eight swimmers advanced to the championship heat.

Rising junior Jan Daniec, who was born in Poland but earned his American citizenship in February, placed 25th overall in the 400-meter freestyle (3:56.49). Incoming freshman Nick Alexiou took 29th (3:56.49) in the event.

Former Virginia swimmer and 2000 Olympian Ed Moses finished 21st overall in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:02.02).

Day two of Olympic Trials continues Tuesday with preliminaries in the women’s 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter breaststroke and 400-meter freestyle and the men’s 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter backstroke.
