LONDON—A total of 11 individuals with ties to the University of Virginia are set to compete in six different disciplines at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London from July 25 to August 12. Daily updates can be found here.
Friday, August 10
Paige Selenski (’13) and Michelle Vittese (’13) – United States – Field Hockey
Selenski scored her first Olympic goal, ripping a second-chance shot into the upper corner of the net in the first six minutes of the United States’ Olympic finale against Belgium. Belgium went on to net two goals to earn the 2-1 victory.
The American squad finished the Olympics in 12th place with a record of 1-5-0, with their lone victory coming against Argentina. Five of the six games, including Friday’s 11-12 Classification Match, were determined by one goal.
Selenski had a strong tournament. In addition to Friday’s goal, she also had a pair of assists in pool play contests. Vittese finished the tournament with a pair of shots, appearing in all six games.
Thursday, August 9
Becky Sauerbrunn (’07) – United States – Women’s Soccer
Sauerbrunn came on in the 81st minute in the U.S. 2-1 win in the gold medal match over Japan at Wembley Stadium. Sauerbrunn became the third Cavalier to earn a gold medal during the 2012 Olympic Games, joining Matt McLean and Lauren Perdue.
Monday, August 6
Becky Sauerbrunn (’07) – United States – Women’s Soccer
Sauerbrunn came on in the 111th minute of the Americans’ 4-3 extra-time victory over Canada in the semifinals at Old Trafford. The United States will face Japan in the Gold Medal match on Thursday at Wembley Stadium.
Paige Selenski (’13) and Michelle Vittese (’13) – United States – Field Hockey
Selenski and Vittese saw action in the U.S. 7-0 loss to South Africa. The United States will now play in the 11th-place game on Friday at 3:30 a.m.
Saturday, August 4
Paige Selenski (’13) and Michelle Vittese (’13) – United States – Field Hockey
Selenski and Vittese both saw action in the U.S. 3-2 loss to New Zealand. Selenski added an assist on the American’s first goal, setting up Katie O’Donnell in front of the net.
Friday, August 3
Inge Janssen (’10) – Netherlands – Rowing
Janssen competed in the women’s double sculls B Final Friday, finishing second with partner Elisabeth Hogerwerf in a time of 7:29.57. The duo concludes the competition in eighth place overall.
Becky Sauerbrunn (’07) – United States – Women’s Soccer
Sauerbrunn was an unused substitute in the United States’ 2-0 win over New Zealand in the quarterfinals at St. James’ Park. The Americans will compete in the semifinals against Canada Monday at Old Trafford.
Thursday, August 2
Katya Bachrouche (’11) – Lebanon – Swimming
Bachrouche broke her own Lebanon national record in the women’s 800-meter freestyle at the Aquatic Centre. Bachrouche, who’s previous best in the 800m free was 8:44.5, finished second in her heat and 19th overall in a time of 8:35.88 at the Aquatics Centre.
Paige Selenski (’13) and Michelle Vittese (’13) – United States – Field Hockey
Both Selenski and Vittese saw action in the American’s 1-0 loss to Australia at Riverbank Arena. Vittese played 57 minutes in the match, while Selenski had 27 minutes of action. Selenski also took a shot in the match, her fourth shot of the Games. Vittese has two shots and an assist in the three contests.
Wednesday, August 1
Lauren Perdue (’13) – United States – Swimming
Perdue earned a gold medal with the United States in the women’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay Wednesday (August 1) at the 2012 Olympic Games. Perdue led off the American prelim relay on Wednesday morning to earn the medal and is the second Cavalier to earn a medal in as many days after Matt McLean (’11) won gold with the U.S. men’s 4x200m free relay on Tuesday.
Perdue led off the prelim relay with a 1:58.07 and teammates Shannon Vreeland, Alyssa Anderson and Dana Vollmer finished the heat in 7:50.75, touching first two seconds faster than Italy (7:52.75).
In the finals, the relay team of Missy Franklin, Vollmer, Vreeland and Allison Schmitt broke the Olympic record in a time of 7:42.92, defeating Australia (7:44.41) and France (7:47.49).
David Karasek (’12) – Switzerland – Swimming
Karasek represented Switzerland and finished 28th in the men’s 200-meter individual medley in a time of 2:01.35. With the time, Karasek breaks his own Swiss national record in the event. His previous best in the 200m IM was 2:01.79.
Tuesday, July 31
Matt McLean (’11) – United States – Swimming
McLean earned gold with the United States’ men’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay team. McLean swam the second leg for United States, which posted the fastest time of the prelims in 7:06.75. The finals’ relay team of Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer, Ricky Berens and Michael Phelps finished in a time of 6:59.70.
Paige Selenski (’13) and Michelle Vittese (’13) – United States – Field Hockey
Selenski and Vittese were both in action as the United States defeated Argentina, 1-0, in a rematch of the 2011 Pan American Games final, in which the Americans were victorious 4-2. Vittese set up the lone goal of the game with a pass from the top of the circle to Shannon Taylor who tipped the ball by the Argentine goalie.
Becky Sauerbrunn (’07) – United States – Women’s Soccer
Sauerbrunn came on in the 76th minute as a substitute for the Americans, who defeated North Korea, 1-0, at Old Trafford. Abby Wambach scored for the United States in the first women’s soccer game at Old Trafford in 23 years.
Yannick Kaeser (’16) – Switzerland – Swimming
Kaeser, an incoming freshman, represented Switzerland in the men’s 200-meter breaststroke Tuesday. The Swiss national record holder in the event finished 24th in a time of 2:13.49.
Will Coleman (’06) – United States – Equestrian
Coleman and his horse, Twizzel, moved up to 37th overall after the third and final portion of eventing, the jumping section. Coleman and Twizzel had only two points in penalties for a total score of 84.70 through the four-day competition.
Inge Janssen (’10) – Netherlands – Rowing
Janssen and teammate Elisabeth Hogerwerf finished fifth in the repechage of the women’s double sculls in a time of 7:19.80. They will compete in the B Final Friday at 5:30 a.m. ET.
Monday, July 30
Will Coleman (’06) – United States – Equestrian
Coleman and his horse, Twizzel, competed in the cross country portion of eventing, placing 46th individually with a score of 36.40 and has a score of 82.70 through the dressage and cross country events. After cross country, Coleman and the United States stand in fifth place in the team standings.
Inge Janssen (’10) – Netherlands – Rowing
Janssen competed for the Netherlands in the women’s double sculls with her partner, Elisabeth Hogerwerf, and finished fourth in her heat in a time of 7:00.10. Janssen and Hogerwerf will compete in the regechage on Tuesday.
Sunday, July 29
Somdev Devvarman (’08) – India – Tennis
Devvarman represented India in the Men’s Singles tennis tournament at Wimbledon, falling in the first round to Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-3, 6-1. Devvarman, who entered the tournament as a wild card selection by the International Tennis Federation, was playing first competitive match in nearly nine months as he is returning from a shoulder injury that has kept him off the ATP Tour since November. He became the first Cavalier to play in the Olympic tennis competition.
Saturday, July 28
Becky Sauerbrunn (07) – United States – Women’s Soccer
Sauebrunn was an unused substitute in the United States’ 3-0 win over Colombia at Hampden Park.
Will Coleman (’06) – United States – Equestrian
Coleman finished 26th individually in the dressage portion of eventing with his horse, Twizzel, and earned a score of 46.30. Coleman’s score helped the United States be in seventh place after dressage.
