Cleveland, Ohio – Virginia sophomore golfer Melissa Edmonson (Coral Gables, Fla.) will begin play at the 2012 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship Monday at the par-72, 6,386-yard The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio. She will start her round from the 10th tee at 1:30 p.m.

The tournament features 36 holes of stroke play Monday and Tuesday before the 156-player field is reduced to 64 players for match play, which runs through Aug. 12. The final four days of the tournament will air on The Golf Channel.

Last season Edmonson played in one tournament for UVa when she competed in the Tar Heel Invitational. She qualified for the Amateur by placing seventh at the Sectional Qualifier at The Wanderers Club in Wellington, Fla.

The U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship was first held in 1895. It is considered the tournament that marks the beginning of women’s competitive golf in the United States.
