SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Virginia women’s soccer team opened its 2012 schedule with a 2-0 exhibition loss on a rainy, windy Friday afternoon at the Notre Dame Practice Field. It marked the eighth consecutive year the teams have met in the preseason.
The Fighting Irish got an unassisted goal from Lauren Bohaboy in the 35th minute and Crystal Thomas scored off an assist from Brittany Von Rueden in the 81st minute.
Each team had 11 shots in the game, while Virginia had a 6-4 corner kick advantage. Goalkeepers Danielle DeLisle (Baltimore, Md.) and Churchill O’Connell (McLean, Va.) each made two saves in 45 minutes of action for Virginia.
“It was a good opportunity against a quality opponent that provided us with a first look at our team,” said assistant coach Ron Raab. “We played some good soccer in spurts, but lacked a little sharpness at times. That was the difference in the game. We created some good scoring opportunities, but were unable to finish, and on the other side they took advantage of their chances. Also, it was a game where we were able to get a lot of players time on the field, which will only help as we move forward.”
The Cavaliers conclude their preseason schedule on Sunday as they host Georgetown. Game time at Klöckner Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
No. 7 Virginia opens the regular season on Aug. 17 with a top-10 showdown against No. 9 Penn State at Klöckner Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
