Cherry Hills Village, Colo. – Virginia sophomore Denny McCarthy has some extra work to do to advance to the match play portion of the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship. McCarthy finished the 36 holes of stroke play tied for 51st place at 2-over 143. Wednesday morning at 7 a.m. MDT he will take place in a 17-man playoff for one of the final 14 spots in the match play field.

McCarthy shot 1-over 71 on the Common Ground Golf Course during Tuesday’s final round of stroke play to earn his spot in the playoff.

The other three players in the field with ties to Virginia failed to advance to match play.

Incoming freshman Nick McLaughlin shot 5-over 76 at the Cherry Hills course to finish at in 162nd place at 8-over 149. Former Cavalier Cory Siegfried placed 180th at 150. Virginia head coach Bowen Sargent placed 256th at 154 after shooting 77 for the second consecutive day.

The University of Alabama’s Bobby Wyatt finished first in match play at 9-under 132.

The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
