CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team continues its six-match homestand at 7 p.m. Friday when it faces No. 19 Xavier at Klöckner Stadium. The first match ever between Virginia (3-2) and Xavier (4-0-1) will mark UVa’s third match this season against a ranked non-conference foe.

Tuesday Recap: Cavaliers Roll Past Mount St. Mary’s, 6-1
Will Bates (Sr., Chester, Va.) recorded a hat trick and Chris Somerville (So., West Chester, Pa.) added a pair of goals as the Virginia men’s soccer team rolled to a 6-1 victory over Mount St. Mary’s Tuesday evening at Klöckner Stadium. Darius Madison (Fr., Philadelphia, Pa.) added a goal for Virginia.
Bates earned his fourth career hat trick, despite playing just the first half, and now has 38 career goals, which ranks 10th in Virginia history. He moved into the top 10 after passing Ryan Gibbs (1999-2002), who recorded 37 career scores.
UVa held a 13-10 shots edge, including 8-2 in the first half. Both teams recorded four corner kicks. The Mount was whistled for 11 fouls, while UVa was credited with nine.
Virginia Snippets
• After going scoreless in the first half in each of the first four contests, the Cavaliers exploded for three scores in the opening stanza Tuesday.
• UVa has allowed an average of one goal per game; Georgetown is the only team to score more than once in a game against the Cavaliers (two goals).
• After playing each of the last 2,363 minutes through 26 straight matches dating to the start of the 2011 season, Spencer LaCivita (So., Raleigh, N.C.) earned his first break Tuesday as Matt Miscione (R-So., Ashburn, Va.) played the second half.
• UVa earned its first three penalty kicks of the year on Tuesday and converted two; the Cavaliers still scored off the miss as Bates knocked the rebound into the back of the net.
• A season-high 21 players saw playing time Tuesday – each earned at least 13 minutes on the field, while Kevin McBride (Jr., Fairfax, Va.) was the lone player to play the full 90 minutes.
• Somerville recorded his first multi-goal game at UVa; he scored one goal as a freshman.
Noting Xavier
Xavier is unbeaten at 4-0-1 this year and is ranked No. 19 nationally in the Soccer America poll and No. 24 in the NSCAA rankings. XU last played Sunday in a 3-1 win at home over Milwaukee.
Luke Spencer is tied for the national lead in goals (6) and total points (14) this season. The Muskies have won the last two Atlantic 10 championships and advanced to the NCAA tournament the past two seasons.
The Youth Movement
Virginia’s lineup has taken on a much younger look this year. The Cavaliers have started at least five freshmen in each game and have had at least eight underclassmen in each starting lineup. Six of UVa’s 11 starters against Duke were freshmen.
Underclassmen have played 79 percent of the possible minutes through five matches (4,039 of 5,115).
Bates Reaches Top 10 in Career Goals
Bates reached the top 10 in career goals at Virginia on Tuesday with a hat trick against Mount St. Mary’s. Bates has 38 career goals and will match Yannick Reyering (2005-07) with his next goal. Bates also has 86 career points, which is nine shy of the UVa top 10.
Tough Early Schedule Continues
The young Virginia side has been challenged with an arduous schedule this year. Xavier will mark the third ranked opponent on the UVa docket; five of UVa’s six opponents thus far have been ranked at some point this season. The Cavaliers are 2-2 against these squads, with both losses coming in overtime.
Top 25 foes Boston College, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest remain on the Cavaliers’ schedule.
On the Horizon
Virginia’s homestand comes to a conclusion at 7 p.m. Tuesday when Drexel visits Klöckner Stadium. UVa then battles reigning national champion North Carolina next Friday (Sept. 21) in a nationally televised match in Chapel Hill (FOX Soccer Channel).
