CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.—The Virginia volleyball team opened its 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference away schedule with a 3-0 loss at Boston College Thursday evening (Sept. 27) at Power Gym.

BC (8-8, 2-2 ACC) recorded 44 kills to UVa’s 33, and outhit the Cavaliers, .197-.146.

Virginia (5-9, 0-4 ACC) was led by freshman Vivian Burcescu (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), who hit seven kills with only one error, while sophomore Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) tallied eight kills, nine digs and 14 assists.

In the first set, UVa had a 24-20 lead, but the Eagles ran off five points in a row to take a 25-24 lead. Senior Jessica O’Shoney (Austin, Texas) followed with a kill to tie the set at 25. The two teams went back and forth until they were tied at 27 before BC earned two kills in a row to take the frame, 29-27.

Boston College hit .379 in the second set, while limiting the Cavaliers to a .094 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-15 win.

In the third set, Virginia led 23-21, but BC came back with three points to earn a match point at 24-23. Janowski paired with sophomore Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) on a block to tie the frame at 24 and two points later Janowski earned a kill to stave off another BC match point. The Cavaliers could not fight off a third match point as the Eagles won 27-25.

The Eagles were led by Krystle Higgins, who hit .714 with 10 kills and five blocks.

Up next, the Cavaliers travel to College Park, Md., to face Maryland on Sunday (Sept. 30) at 2 p.m.
