LOS ANGELES – Virginia women’s tennis first-year Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) came up short in her bid to win the first major championship in school history, falling to No. 3 seed Lauren Embree of Florida 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in Sunday’s final at the Riviera Country Club.

Elbaba won 10 matches at the event to reach the final, winning three in pre-qualifying, three in qualifying and now four in the main draw. She defeated three 2012 All-Americans at the event.

Prior to this event, no Cavalier had ever made the quarterfinals at one of the three major tournaments (ITA All-American, ITA Intercollegiate Indoors, NCAA Championships).
