Starsia Announces 2012 Team Awards

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – In a fall tradition, Virginia men’s lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia announced team award winners from the 2012 season. Steele Stanwick headlines the honorees as a repeat winner of the Allen Voshell Award for Team MVP.

“It is my great honor to name the recipients of our Team Awards from this past 2012 season,” said Starsia. “There were a number of outstanding performances, on and off the field, that distinguished an effort that reached the NCAA Quarterfinals. A college lacrosse season that now begins in early September and may extend until late in May is a complex mix of out of season training, community service, academic achievement and game results. Today’s announcement identifies those who assumed positions of leadership throughout the year.”

There were a few repeat winners in 2012 in addition to team MVP Stanwick. Class of ’99 Unsung Hero Award went to Chris Clements for the second year in a row, while Dan Lantz repeated as the recepient for the Doyle Smith Award for highest GPA. Lantz has a 3.9 GPA in foreign affairs.

The Tommy Compton Alumni Award went to Tom Burt (class of ’90) and Nick Gannon (class of ’92). The duo were instrumental in organizing “Wakely Flyers,” a group of UVa lacrosse alums who, over the past five years, have put together and led a bike team that has raised money in the name of teammate Chris Wakely, to benefit the fight against Multiple Sclerosis.

Other awards winners include Matt Lovejoy (Best of Defense), Wyatt Melzer (Team Spirit), Rob Fortunato (Most Improved) and Matt Kugler (Lawrie Riggs Award for Citizenship). Stanwick also picked up the Harry Gaver Award for Leadership and the Best on Offense Award.

Nine of 11 seniors in 2012 were able to make it back for last week’s alumni game.
