Virginia Travels to No. 22 Boston College Friday Night

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team returns to ACC competition Friday evening with a match at Boston College. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Newton Campus Field.

Series History
The all-time series is even at 4-4-1. BC owns a 4-3-1 edge since entering the ACC in 2005, including a 2-1 win in Charlottesville last season.

The Cavaliers’ last win at BC came Sept. 24, 2005, a 4-3 victory over the Eagles.

Cavaliers Stand 17th in Latest NCAA RPI Virginia is ranked No. 17 nationally in the second Ratings Percentage Index from the NCAA. The RPI weighs heavily in the NCAA tournament selection process.

Virginia’s strong strength of schedule has been key to the good RPI. UVa has played six of the top 25 teams and nine of the top 50 in the latest RPI. Boston College will be the 10th top-50 opponent for the Cavaliers; the Eagles stand 33rd in the RPI.

• The Cavaliers are seventh in the ACC with six points, but are just two points behind fifth-place Clemson and five points behind fourth-place BC.
• Virginia will be playing its fourth true road game of the year; the Cavaliers are 1-2 on the road, with a double-OT win at VCU and one-goal losses to North Carolina and Maryland.
• UVa will be playing its first game on artificial turf since Oct. 22, 2010, also at Boston College.
• Will Bates (Sr., Chester, Va.) is tied for the ACC goal lead with Maryland’s Patrick Mullins; both have 10 goals this year. Bates has amassed his total in one fewer game.
• Freshman Marcus Salandy-Defour (Kensington, Md.) scored his first two college goals last week.
• Scott Thomsen (Fr., Brick, N.J.) owns a team-high five assists this year; that ranks fourth in the ACC and most among ACC freshmen. Four of the five assists have come off corner kicks.

Cavaliers Rally for OT Win over Virginia Tech
The Virginia men’s soccer team came back from a 2-0 second-half deficit to score a 3-2 overtime victory over Virginia Tech last Friday on Senior Night at Klöckner Stadium. Zach Carroll (Fr., Grand Blanc, Mich.) headed home the golden goal with just 12 seconds remaining in overtime to extend UVa’s unbeaten streak against the Hokies to seven matches.

Carroll, Salandy-Defour and Bates all scored goals, while Thomsen notched a pair of assists off corner kicks.

Virginia out-shot Virginia Tech, 17-9, including 10-4 during the second half and overtime. The Cavaliers took six corner kicks, compared to four for Virginia Tech. UVa committed 20 fouls, while Tech was whistled for 17.

Scouting Boston College
BC stands fourth in the ACC heading into the final two league weekends. The Eagles have been stout on defense of late, allowing just one goal in their last five contests, going 2-2-1 during that stretch.

Charlie Rugg leads the team in scoring with five goals and four assists, while Derrick Boateng owns three goals and three assists.
