CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s basketball team hosts Fairfield of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in their home opener on Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. The game is part of the NIT Season Tip-Off and the winner of the game will play either Penn or Delaware on Tuesday, Nov. 13 for the right to play in Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, Nov. 21.

The Cavaliers are looking for their first win of the season and are hoping to stretch their home-opener winning streak to 16 games. Virginia’s last home-opening loss was a 62-52 loss to then-No. 25 Clemson back on Dec. 7, 1996.

Virginia lost its season opener last Friday at George Mason, 63-59. Sophomore Joe Harris (Chelen, Wash.) led the Cavaliers with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Akil Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C.) added a career-high 11 points and seven rebounds. Virginia started three freshman (Justin Anderson, Taylor Barnette and Mike Tobey) in its season opener for the first time in school history. Freshman Evan Nolte (Milton, Ga.) also played as Virginia missed the services of senior point guard Jontel Evans (Hampton, Va.) and sophomore guard Malcolm Brogdon(Norcross, Ga.).

Virginia is meeting Fairfield for the third time in a series that dates back to 1981. The teams are meeting for the first time since 1991 when Virginia defeated the Stags, 84-52. Fairfield opened the season with a 64-63 overtime win over Central Connecticut on Saturday, Nov. 10. Kevin Matthews led the Stags with 15 points. The Cavaliers are 14-0 all-time against MAAC opponents.
