CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia (1-2) continues its nonconference season by hosting Seattle (1-0) of the Western Athletic Conference on Saturday, Nov. 17. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers are looking to even their record at 2-2 after suffering a 59-53 loss to Delaware of the Colonial Athletic Association during the NIT Season Tip-Off on Nov. 13.
The Cavaliers are meeting Seattle for the third consecutive year in a series that started in 2010-11. Virginia defeated the Redhawks, 83-77, last season at KeyArena as Mike Scott tallied 33 points and 14 rebounds and Joe Harris (Chelan, Wash.), Sammy Zeglinski and Malcolm Brogdon(Norcross, Ga.) all reached double figures in scoring. Seattle defeated Virginia, 59-53, in Charlottesville on Dec. 22, 2010.
Seattle head coach Cameron Dollar is in his fourth season at the school. Seattle opened the 2012-13 season with an 87-72 win over Montana State on Nov. 11. Chad Rasmussen and Allen Tate scored 20 points each to lead Seattle. D’Vonne Pickett, Jr., added 13 points and Louis Green added 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
Harris and Akil Mitchell (Charlotte, N.C.) have led the way for Virginia this season. Harris, who tallied a season-high 20 points against Delaware, is averaging a career-high 18 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, while Mitchell is averaging a career-high 12.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Virginia is averaging 55.3 points per game on 38.5 percent shooting from the floor. The Cavaliers have out-rebounded their opponents in each of the first three games, but have trailed at the half in each game. Senior point guard Jontel Evans(Hampton, Va.) returned to the lineup against Delaware and played three minutes in limited action. Sophomore Brogdon remains sidelined with an ankle injury.
Freshmen Justin Anderson (Montross, Va.), Taylor Barnette (Lexington, Ky.), Evan Nolte (Milton, Ga.) and Mike Tobey(Monroe, N.Y.) have each started at least one game this season. Nolte leads Virginia freshmen in scoring with 6.7 points per game, while Anderson leads the team with three assists per game.
