CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia hosts North Texas in NIT Season Tip-Off action tonight at John Paul Jones Arena.

IUPUI (2-3) plays Lamar (0-4) at 4:30 p.m. in the first game tonight followed by Virginia (3-2) and North Texas (3-2) at 7 p.m.

Virginia and North Texas meet for the first time in school history.

The Cavaliers and Mean Green each bring two-game winning streaks into tonight’s game. Virginia has defeated Seattle (83-43) and Lamar (63-44) in its last two games, while North Texas has defeated Cameron (78-49) and IUPUI (80-66).

Virginia used 17 points from junior guard Joe Harris (Chelan, Wash.) and a career-best nine points from sophomore guard Paul Jesperson (Merrill, Wis.) in its win over Lamar last night. Redshirt freshman Teven Jones (Kannapolis, N.C.) added six points and two assists in his first career start and junior forward Akil Mitchell(Charlotte, N.C.) registered 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Harris leads Virginia in scoring with a career-high 15.6 points per game. Mitchell is having a breakout season, averaging career highs in scoring (12.4) and rebounding (10.4). Freshman forward/center Mike Tobey(Monroe, N.Y.) leads UVa newcomers in scoring at 6.8 points per game.

Virginia is averaging 62.4 points per game and holding its opponents to 50.8 ppg. The Cavaliers are 3-0 when holding opponents under 50 points and 20-1 when holding opponents under 50 points during the Tony Bennettera. Bennett, who is 56-43 in four seasons at Virginia, sports a 35-16 record in nonconference action at UVa.

Tony Mitchell, who is averaging 15.6 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, leads North Texas. Jordan Williams and Chris Jones are averaging 13 and 10.6 points per game, respectively. Jones is also averaging over six assists per game. North Texas is averaging 71.6 points per game and allowing 64.6 ppg. Head coach Tony Benford is in his first year at North Texas.

Tickets for NIT Season Tip-Off consolation action are not part of the 2012-13 men’s basketball season ticket package. Reserved tickets for tonight’s games are on sale for $10. Reserved seats in sections 112-114 are being held for season ticket holders and Virginia Athletics Foundation donors.

Fans may purchase tickets for tonight’s games online at VirginiaSports.com or through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office by telephone and in person. The athletics ticket office is located in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium and open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Telephone purchases can be made by calling 1-800-542-UVA1 (8821) or locally at 434-924-UVA1 (8821). Tickets may also be purchased on game day at the JPJA box office starting at 3 p.m. Please note that individual tickets purchased are valid for both games tonight.

Parking for the tonight’s games are free and available in the John Paul Jones Arena surface lot and the University Hall and McCue Center lots. John Paul Jones Arena garage parking pass holders will receive a separate parking pass to be used for the NIT Season Tip-Off consolation round games.
