Virginia Takes on Georgia Tech in Atlanta

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (9-5, 1-2 ACC) will face Georgia Tech (8-6, 1-2 ACC) in Atlanta on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. A video feed of the game will stream live on the internet on ESPN3.
This will be the third ACC road game of the year for the Cavaliers, who are 0-2 against conference opponents when away from John Paul Jones Arena this season. Virginia has lost at then No. 9 Maryland and now No. 24/25 Miami.
The Cavaliers own a 52-12 all-time record against Georgia Tech and are 43-12 against the Yellow Jackets in ACC games. Georgia Tech has won the last two meetings, both of which were played in Atlanta. The Jackets had a 10-point win, 63-53, last year and a 20-point win, 68-48, in 2011. The Cavaliers’ last victory in Atlanta was a 61-38 win in 2005. Both teams were in Puerto Rico at the 2012 San Juan Shootout, but did not face one another in the tournament.
Virginia is coming off a 58-52 loss at Miami. Kelsey Wolfe (Jr., Germantown, Md.) scored 18 points, her fifth time this season leading UVa in scoring. Wolfe stepped up her offense in the second half, scoring 12 of her points after the break. Wolfe scored six points during the Cavaliers’ 17-2 run that erased a 14-point deficit and gave the Cavaliers a 46-45 lead with 9:44 remaining.
In addition to Wolfe’s offense, she was also an important key in the Cavalier defense with a career-high six steals. It was the second time this season a UVa player had grabbed six steals in a game. Ataira Franklin (Jr., Bowie, Md.) also had a six-steal game at Alabama.
Franklin is the only Cavalier averaging double-digit points in ACC contests (12.3 ppg). Franklin leads the team with an overall 11.8 ppg scoring average. Franklin has played the full 40 minutes in each of the last two games and is averaging more minutes per game (38.0) in ACC games than any other player in the conference.
Telia McCall (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) had the first double-double of her career with 10 points and 11 rebounds at Miami. McCall came close to having a double-double her freshman year when she had a career-high 20 rebounds against North Carolina (with nine points). She also flirted with a double-double twice this season with eight points and 12 rebounds at Alabama and nine points and 14 rebounds against Norfolk State.
McCall, who is averaging 11.0 rebounds per game in her last six games, is eighth in the ACC in rebounding, averaging 8.1 per game. She has led the team in rebounding in five of the last six games.
McCall grew up in Marietta, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta 20 miles north of downtown. She graduated from Marietta High in 2009, scoring more than 1,800 points for the Blue Devils in her high school career. She was named the Georgia 5A Player of the Year her senior season.
China Crosby (Sr., New York, N.Y.) is shooting 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the free throw line in ACC games this season, ranking second in the conference. Crosby has only missed one free throw in her last nine games (14-of-15). She has at least one three-pointer in each of her last five games.
Sarah Imovbioh (So., Abuja, Nigeria) has moved back into the top spot in the conference rankings for field goal percentage. Imovbioh, who was 2-of-3 from the field, scoring four points with six rebounds in 14 minutes at Miami, is making 64.9 percent of her shot attempts. She is third on the team in scoring, averaging 10.6 points per game.
Assistant coach Kim McNeill gave birth to twins on Friday, Jan. 4. The girl, Gabrielle Peyton, was born first, weighing 4 lbs. 13 oz., with the boy, Cayden Cory, being born an hour later, weighing 5 lbs. 6 oz. Kim was with the team through the Coppin State game but has been on leave since then. Her husband, assistant coach Cory McNeill, left the team right after the Virginia Tech win and rejoined the team in Miami late Saturday night, the day after the twins were born, missing two practices but no games.
After playing back-to-back ACC road games, the Cavaliers will return home to host NC State on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m.
