Virginia Takes on Boston College Thursday at Home

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team (12-6, 4-3 ACC) hosts Boston College (8-9, 2-4 ACC) on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena. It is the first time this season the Cavaliers will play back-to-back ACC home games.
Virginia holds a 10-2 advantage in the series and has won nine of the last 10 meetings, including a 72-41 victory against BC last year in the ACC Tournament.The Cavaliers are coming off a 62-52 victory over Miami. The victory moved Virginia into a tie with Miami for fifth place in the ACC, with both teams holding 4-3 conference records.
The two games this season between Miami and Virginia were a mere 14 days apart, with Miami winning the first 58-52 and Virginia taking Sunday’s game. In the first meeting, UVa had 24 turnovers. They had 10 in the second meeting, the second-lowest turnover total of the season, behind seven against Xavier. In the first meeting of the year, Virginia shot 15.4 percent from three-point range (2-of-13). In the second game, Virginia shot 60.0 percent (6-of-10) from long range, its top three-point shooting game since going 5-for-8 (62.5 percent) against Wake Forest on Feb. 10, 2011.
The Cavaliers have made at least five three-pointers in each of the last four games. It is the first time that Virginia has had four-straight games against ACC opponents in which it has made five or more three-pointers since it closed out the 2002-03 season with six straight.
Last Sunday, Boston College fell 92-87 in double overtime to Wake Forest. The Eagles held a 69-64 lead with 1:43 remaining in regulation, but the Demon Deacons tied the game, 71-71, on a layup from Sandra Garcia with 1.9 seconds left. Kristen Doherty hit a layup for the Eagles with 12 seconds remaining in the first overtime to tie it, 78-78, and force another session. Although BC gained an 83-80 lead early in the final period, Wake Forest then used a 10-2 run to help seal the victory.
Boston College leads the ACC in made-three pointers, averaging 7.1 per game. The Eagles’ Nicole Boudreau averages an ACC-leading 2.5 per game. BC’s Kerri Shields is second with 2.4 per game. Ataira Franklin (Jr., Bowie, Md.) is the Cavaliers’ most-prolific three-point shooter, making 1.35 per game.
Franklin had her best shooting game of the year against Miami, going 6-of-8 from the field (75.0 percent), including a 3-for-3 performance from three-point range.Franklin comes into the game with 985 career points, 15 shy of becoming the 29th player in program history to join the 1,000 point club.
Telia McCall (Sr., Marietta, Ga.) had her second-straight game of 13 points, eight rebounds against Miami. McCall, whose 8.4 rebounds per game ranks sixth in the ACC, has had no fewer than seven rebounds in each of her last 10 games. McCall has led the Cavaliers in rebounding in seven of the last 10 games and is averaging 10.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game against ACC opponents.
Kelsey Wolfe (Jr., Germantown, Md.) and China Crosby (New York, N.Y.) scored 12 points against Miami. Along with Franklin and McCall, they combined to give the Cavaliers four players in double-digits in a game for the fifth time this season.
Crosby’s 12 points was her fifth double-digit scoring effort of the season and her second in the last three games. Crosby is averaging 9.7 points and 4.3 assists per game in that same span.
Wolfe continues to pace the team with a 12.3 points-per-game average. Wolfe extended her streak of double-digit scoring to five games with her 12-point effort against Miami. Wolfe is averaging 16.8 points per game during the streak.
With the win over Miami, Virginia improved its RPI to 43 from last week’s ranking of 50. The ACC has four teams with RPI’s in the top-20. Maryland (7) has the best RPI in the conference, followed by Duke (14), Florida State (16) and North Carolina (19).
The Cavaliers will take on Wake Forest (10-8, 3-3 ACC) on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. in Winston-Salem. Virginia will have a week off after the Wake game, returning to action on Sunday, Feb. 3 when it hosts Georgia Tech at 1 p.m.
