Cavaliers Begin Competition at VT Elite Meet

BLACKSBURG, Va. – he Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams returned to action on Friday with the first day of the Virginia Tech Elite Meet. The Cavaliers have 27 athletes in action at the meet, which features numerous ranked programs.
“Tonight was a big learning experience for us versus some of the nation’s top programs,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “Having coached in the SEC I knew what was coming. There was a purpose for scheduling this meet and I think the point has been made to our team of what it is like out there and what the expectation level is for the future.”
In the women’s high jump, Jordan Lavender made her debut in the event and finished fourth at 5.84m. She was joined in the finals of the event by Dallas Rose, who finished seventh at 5.70m.
On the men’s side, Payton Hazzard finished second in the invitational 400m race in a time of 47.93. Cody Snyder finished seventh in the 800m at 1:53.32. Matt Armentrout had a personal record of 4.75m in the pole vault.
“Anytime you ask an individual to move outside their comfort zone it takes time for the adaptations to occur,” said Fetzer. “We are clearly headed in the right direction. We had some solid performances tonight and continue to learn. Several individuals had big breakthroughs even if their performances did not indicate it. Those will come soon, I am 100 percent confident in that.”
The Cavaliers will conclude action at the VT Elite Meet on Saturday. In addition, five Virginia athletes will compete in the men’s and women’s mile and 3000m at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
“Saturday is a big day for us in both Seattle and here in Blacksburg,” said Fetzer. “I am excited to see how we respond to the challenge.”
