Cavaliers Compete Against Strong Competition at Husky Classic

SEATTLE – Five members of the Virginia track and field teams traveled west to compete against the nation’s top runners at the Husky Classic at the University of Washington. The Cavaliers had athletes compete in the men’s and women’s mile and 3000m in one of the strongest fields in the nation this year.

The women’s team had two runners at the meet. Vicky Fouhy finished 20th in women’s mile in a collegiate best time of 4:42.09, the seventh fastest time in school history. Kathleen Stevens was 31st in the 3000m at 9:33.39, the ninth fastest time in school history.

“I am very happy with both Fouhy and Stevens,” said women’s distance coach Todd Morgan. “Their performances were two positive steps heading into ACC’s. They both were aggressive and competed well. Things are setting up great for the rest of the season.”

The men’s group was led by Mark Amirault, who finished 16th in the 3000m at 7:57.28. Taylor Gilland ran a personal best 8:11.12 as he entered Virginia top 10 list in the 3000m at No. 8. Anthony Kostelac competed in the mile, finishing 25th.

“We didn’t capitalize on the opportunity we had this weekend,” said men’s distance coach Pete Watson. “We need to regroup and get ready for the ACC’s.”

The Cavaliers will have next weekend off before traveling to Blacksburg Feb. 21-23 for the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
