Texas A&M Defeats Virginia, 4-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 13 Texas A&M defeated No. 12 Virginia, 4-1, in the consolation round of the 2013 ITA Women’s National Indoor Championships late Sunday night at Boar’s Head Sports Club.
The Cavaliers dropped all three matches at the ITA National Indoors, but gained valuable experience against No. 4 USC, No. 16 Michigan and No. 13 Texas A&M.
A&M won two of three matches to earn the doubles point. Virginia’s doubles tandem of Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) beat Wen Sun and Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
Epstein tied the score at 1-1 with her first singles win of the weekend, defeating Sun 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.
A&M’s Stefania Hristov defeated Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 and Cristinia Stancu gave A&M a 3-2 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Li Xi (Kunming, China) at No. 2.
Sanchez-Quintanar clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y) at No. 1.
“Despite coming up short in the win-loss column, this weekend was very valuable and, in many ways, positive for this team,” Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau said. “The team gave a great, great effort throughout, including a mammoth battle against USC to start the weekend. To see the effort sustained tonight after two very tough matches was very positive. The scoreboard does not tell the entire story. Even though we didn’t get to three in any match, we actually were only a set, or even just a few games away from winning all three nights.
“We talked carefully, openly and honestly about the many great things the team and individuals did this weekend. We also defined numerous specifics that we can learn from and improve in our games. I know the team is hurting a bit, but leaves this tournament hungrier, more determined and more aware than before. We will benefit from this as we move forward this season. I am proud of the team and look forward to helping them improve as a completely committed group each day ahead.”
The Cavaliers (1-3) return to action at Ole Miss on Saturday, Feb. 23.
