CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team travels to Baton Rouge, La., this weekend for the Purple and Gold Challenge Feb. 15-17. The Cavaliers (2-1) will compete against host and No. 10/11 LSU on Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m. UVa will also play Memphis on Friday at 3 p.m., North Dakota State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., and Nicholls State on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. All times are EST.

The Cavaliers opened the 2013 season last weekend at the Campbell/Hampton Inn Invitational in Buies Creek, N.C. In the opener against Robert Morris, senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) threw a two-hit, 16-strikeout shutout of the Colonials in a 4-0 UVa win. Mitchell set the program record for most career starts with 113.
After an 8-0 loss to the host Camels, the Cavaliers rebounded and defeated St. Bonaventure, 15-5, to close out the weekend. Senior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.), junior Erica Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) all hit home runs, while freshman hurler Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) tossed a complete game for her first win.
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend when they travel to the West Coast for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., Feb. 21-23.
