Virginia Finishes Action at Cavalier Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–Virginia swimmers concluded action at the Cavalier Invite Saturday (Feb. 16) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. This was the final meet for the Cavaliers before the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, which start next week in Greensboro, N.C.
At the end of the early session Saturday, freshman Rodney Fentress won the men’s 1,650 free in 15:28.35.
During the night session, the 200 medley relay team of freshman Courtney Bartholomew, sophomores Ellen Williamson and Emily Dicus and junior Dana Nessler touched first in a time of 1:42.96. On the men’s side, freshman Luke Papendick, junior Taylor Grey, senior Brady Fox and sophomore Charlie Rommel won in 1:29.49.
Sophomore Charlie Putnam claimed the men’s 400 IM in 3:55.32, while freshman Samantha James took the women’s 200 free in 1:48.27.
Junior Fred Crawford touched first in the men’s 200 free in 1:40.62 before classmate Riley Flanagan won the women’s 100 fly in 55.66.
In the women’s 200 breast, freshman Natalie Martin earned first in 2:16.11, while classmate Eric Holden was second in the men’s 200 breast in 2:01.35.
Senior Meg Hutchinson won the women’s 100 back in 56.09, while Putnam won his second event of the day in the men’s 100 back in 50.71.
Freshman Samantha James claimed the women’s 50 free in 23.33, while sophomore Jake Pearce posted the second-fastest UVa time this season in taking the men’s 50 in 20.33.
In the final events of the day, the women’s 400 free relay team of James, Nessler and seniors Christine Olson and Anais Menguy finished first in 3:28.70, while the men’s relay of Pearce, Crawford, Putnam and freshman Greg Stoffa placed second in 3:07.02.
The women’s ACC Championships begin Wednesday (Feb. 20) and run through Saturday (Feb. 23), while the men’s meet is Feb. 27-March 2. Both meets will be held in Greensboro, N.C.
