Virginia Men Look for 16th ACC Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The No. 9 Virginia men’s swimming and diving team will compete for its 16th overall and sixth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Wednesday to Saturday (Feb. 27-March 2) at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. The will be the first men’s meet to be held at a neutral site.
The ACC Digital Network and ESPN3 will broadcast the finals on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Links to the free live video and live results will be available and linked through VirginiaSports.com.
“Consistency will be the key this weekend,” UVa head coach Mark Bernardino said. “We have to be steady and every session has to have an important meaning to every swimmer. Every swim needs to be a good swim. There is no room for error.”
The Cavalier men’s divers competed last weekend at the GAC, where sophomore JB Kolod and freshman Carl Buergler earned 65 points, the fourth-most in the conference. Kolod earned a bronze medal on the 3-meter springboards to earn All-ACC honors.
Virginia Tech leads with 138 points through the three diving events, followed by Duke (91), Florida State (85), Virginia (65), NC State (39), North Carolina (22), Miami (13) and Georgia Tech (11).
“Certainly this is one of the smaller deficits we’ve had in the past decade,” Bernardino said. “Virginia Tech is a powerful diving school and has a significant lead. We’re going to have to steadily chip away at their lead and catch up. This is the closest we have been to Florida State in a long, long time and we’re glad to be in the position we’re in. This is good, positive step for a diving team.”
In 2012, the Cavaliers won their 13th title of the last 14 years with 626.5 points, ahead of Virginia Tech (594.5) and North Carolina (564). UVa finished its dual meet season this year with an 8-1 record, with its only blemish a one-point defeat at Indiana.
The Cavaliers are the highest ranked team in the ACC at No. 9 in the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll. Florida State is tabbed No. 15 followed by North Carolina at No. 16, while Virginia Tech and NC State are No. 21 and No. 22, respectively.
Three Virginia student-athletes were honored with weekly conference awards this season. Junior Brad Phillips and Kolod were recognized for their efforts against ACC rivals Duke and North Carolina, while junior Jan Daniec was honored Jan. 29 for his performance against Wisconsin and Virginia Tech.
The action begins Wednesday with the 200 medley relay at 6 p.m. and the 800 free relay at 7 p.m.
