Charlottesville, Va. – The Virginia men’s golf team opens the spring portion of its 2012-13 schedule this weekend at the USF Invitational in Dade City, Fla. The 17-team field will compete at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club starting Sunday, March 3. The 54-hole tournament features 18 holes of competition through Tuesday.

The Cavaliers then head to Aiken, S.C. for the Cleveland Palmetto, March 12-13 and finish off their spring break week at the Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., March 15-17.

Virginia’s lineup for the USF Invitational will include Denny McCarthy, Nick McLaughlin, Mac McLaughlin, Ji Soo Park and Alex Lloyd. This will be Lloyd’s first collegiate tournament.

McCarthy led the Cavaliers in scoring last fall with a 72.25 stroke average for four tournaments. He opened the season by picking up his first collegiate victory, earning medalist honors at the Northern Open. He enters this week’s play ranked No. 53 in the Golfweek standings.

The field for the USF Invitational includes: Cincinnati, DePaul, Eastern Michigan, No. 18 Florida State, Kennesaw State, No. 35 Kentucky, Louisville, Marquette, Mercer, Middle Tennessee State, NC State, Rice, No. 41 South Carolina, South Florida, Troy and Wisconsin.

Virginia finished in the top five in three of four fall tournaments, wrapping up its slate with a fourth-place finish at the U.S. Collegiate. McCarthy was also UVa’s top finisher (12th) at the Mason Rudolph Championships. Mac McLaughlin turned in the team’s top performance at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate by placing sixth. Ji Soo Park led the Cavaliers with a ninth-place effort at the U.S. Collegiate.

UCF won the USF Invitational in 2012 with a score of 10-under 854.
