NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Virginia men’s track and field team kicked off the final weekend of the indoor regular season on Friday with a strong showing by the distance medley relay at the Alex Wilson Invitational. The quartet of Brandon Burton, Payton Hazzard, Anthony Kostelac and Taylor Gilland finished in 9:31.23, the second fastest indoor DMR in school history.
“This was a phenomenal job of stepping it up when you have to step it up,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “That’s what this weekend is all about. Hopefully it is the start of a strong weekend for us.”
The Cavalier relay finished 12th at the meet, which featured every top DMR. The top 14 times at the Alex Wilson Invitational are the 14 fastest DMR times of the year. The top 12 squads after this weekend will advance to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, next week in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Virginia will conclude competition this week on Saturday as three athletes compete at the Alex Wilson Invitational, while the majority of the squad competes at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier in Blacksburg.
