CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team posted its third top-five win of the season, downing No. 5 Oklahoma 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers improve to 7-0 this season, including four top-10 wins, while the Sooners fall to 9-3 on the year.

“Oklahoma is a great team, they are top five for a reason and we knew we were going to be challenged today,” said head coach Brian Boland. “We came out with a lot of energy and played hard, but we just didn’t execute as well as we are capable of at some spots. You are going to have off days every once in a while, but when you do, you have to fight hard and we did that today. We got through the doubles point and then our bottom three guys did a great job for us.”

Virginia opened the match by winning a tight doubles point. Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) gave the Cavaliers the edge with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Lawrence Formentera and Peerakit Siributwong. At No. 2, Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) were down two breaks, 4-1, but rallied for an 8-6 win over Guillermo Alcorta and Axel Alvarez Llamas to clinch the opening point.

In singles, the Cavaliers got three quick wins at the bottom of the lineup to clinch the victory. Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) was first off the courts, downing Alvarez Llamas 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. A minute later Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) sealed a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5 over Formentera. Uriguen followed with his 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 6 over Siributwong to seal the win for Virginia.

The matches at the top two positions split sets and went to a third set match tiebreaker. At No. 2, Domijan raced out to a 9-0 lead in the breaker before closing out a 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 win over Alcorta. Jenkins rallied from losing the first set against Costin Paval to force a third set. He also opened the third-set breaker strong, winning the first six points, en route to a 2-6, 6-4, 10-2 victory.

With the Cavaliers leading 6-0, the Sooners won the final match on the courts. Dane Webb topped Frank 7-6(6), 6-2 at No. 3 to make the final score 6-1.

Virginia begins a four-match spring break road trip on March 11 at Baylor. The Cavaliers won’t return home until March 22 when they open ACC play by hosting No. 4 Duke.
