CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Cavaliers (4-1), ranked No. 8 in this week’s USILA coaches poll and No. 9 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll, return home to Klöckner Stadium for a Tuesday contest with the Vermont Catamounts (1-3). Faceoff is slated for 4 p.m. and live stats will be available at VirginiaSports.com. The game was originally scheduled for 7 p.m., but the forecast for inclement weather prompted the change to 4 p.m.
There will be a video webcast on VirginiaSports.com through Cavaliers Live for a subscription cost. Luke Neer will bring the play-by-play and Doug Tarring will provide the analysis.
The Cavaliers are looking to bounce back after losing at Syracuse and starting a season 4-1 for the second time in three seasons. During UVa’s 2011 title season the Cavaliers also lost their first game of the season at Syracuse after starting 4-0.
Mark Cockerton leads UVa and the nation with 19 goals and a 4.75 goals per game average. Nick O’Reilly paces the Cavaliers with 13 assists and Scott McWilliams has 24 ground balls and ranks No. 2 nationally with 16 caused turnovers and a 3.2 caused turnovers per game average. Dan Marino is saving 47.3 percent of shots between the pipes and posting a 8.69 goals against average.
Tuesday night marks the sixth-straight season the Cavaliers have hosted the Catamounts in a series where UVa holds the all-time 5-0 advantage. Former UVa All-American Ryan Curtis coaches Vermont. A four-year letterwinner under Virginia head coach Dom Starsia, Curtis won the Schmeisser Cup as the nation’s outstanding defenseman in 1999 when the Cavaliers won their first national championship in 27 years.
Graham Horvath leads Vermont with eight goals and is tied for the team high with eight points, sharing the lead with Drew Phillie, who has seven goals and one assist. A.J. Masson has a team-high four assists, while Andrew Muscara has a team-best 32 ground balls while winning 51.8 percent (43-of-83) of faceoffs. Justin Rosenberg has started the last two games inside the pipes, saving 60.9 percent of shots against him and posting an 8.90 goals against average.
Next on the UVa slate is No. 3 Cornell, who comes to Klöckner Stadium on Saturday. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Tickets for Virginia home lacrosse games can be purchased online at VirginiaSports.com, by phone at (800) 542-8821 or in person at the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Virginia lacrosse season tickets for 2013 are $50 (adult general admission) and $40 (youth, senior, faculty/staff general admission). Single-game tickets to lacrosse games are $8 (adult general admission), and $6 (youth, senior, faculty/staff general admission).
