WACO, Texas – Baylor defeated Virginia, 4-3, in women’s tennis action Tuesday night at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco.

Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Li Xi (Kunming, China) posted singles victories, but the Cavaliers fall to 3-5. Baylor improves to 5-10.

Baylor claimed the doubles point as No. 25 Ema Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva beat Tomljanovic and Xi 8-4 at No. 1 and Kiah Generette and Megan Horter defeated Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) 8-5 at No. 3. Virginia’s Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and Nauta (Galveston, Texas) posted an 8-4 win over Baylor’s Alex Clay and Alex Leatu.

Baylor jumped to a 2-0 lead after Horter beat Vierra 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Tomljanovic put Virginia on the scoreboard with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Jordann Sanford at No. 5.

No. 25 Burgic beat No. 13 Elbaba 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 to give the Bears a 3-1 lead. No. 71 Nauta cut the deficit to 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kisialeva at No. 2.

Alex Leatu clinched the win for the Bears with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) at No. 6. Xi defeated Generette 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 at No. 4 to close out the scoring.

Virginia returns to action Wednesday at No. 3 Texas A&M. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
