CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team hosts in-state foes James Madison and Longwood in doubleheaders Wednesday and Thursday (March 13-14) at The Park in Charlottesville. Action for both days begins at 4 p.m.
The Cavaliers (9-10) went 1-2 over the weekend in their 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference opening series against Georgia Tech at The Park. UVa dropped both games Saturday, 7-3 and 5-2, before winning the finale, 4-2, on Sunday (March 10).
Senior Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) became the program’s all-time strikeout leader with 934 career strikeouts. She also sits in second place in career complete games with 100 and is tied for third in wins with 70. Mitchell is 7-6 this season with a 2.14 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 85.0 innings.
Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) leads the squad with a .296 batting average, while junior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.), sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Bowdren lead the team with three home runs each.
James Madison (14-6) is led by Erica Field, who is batting .406, and Sarah Mooney, who is batting .368 with six home runs.
Longwood (16-5), hitting .348 as a team, is led by Megan Baltzell and Brooke Short, who are batting .492 with 10 home runs and .483 with seven long balls, respectively.
