CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Cavaliers (5-2), ranked No. 9 in this week’s USILA coaches poll and No. 11 in this week’s Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll, are coming off a one-goal loss to the Cornell Big Red on March 9. Next up for UVa are the Ohio State Buckeyes (4-1), ranked No. 12 in both the coaches and media polls. The Buckeyes are coming of their first loss of the season, a 10-9 setback to Denver in ECAC action. Faceoff is set for 3 p.m. and is scheduled as the second game of a double header with the UVa women’s lacrosse team. The women play Princeton at noon.

Saturday marks the seventh all-time meeting between the Cavaliers and Buckeyes in men’s lacrosse and the fifth matchup in Charlottesville. UVa holds a 6-0 all-time advantage in the series and at one juncture scored 34-straight goals over a three-game span. The series began in 1968 in Charlottesville, but was discontinued until 1999.
Mark Cockerton entered the week leading the nation in goals and currently has 22, while also posting 24 points. Nick O’Reilly leads the team with 15 assists, while tallying a team-high 25 points. Matt White and Rob Emery have 13 and 12 goals respectively to help pace UVa. Scott McWilliams has caused 20 turnovers and entered the week No. 1 in the nation in that category. The defenseman also has 29 ground balls and four points, courtesy of a goal and three assists. Dan Marino is posting an 9.12 goals against average between the pipes and saving 45.0 percent of shots against him.
Ohio State’s head coach Nick Myers is in his fifth season and returns 29 letterwinners and seven starters off of last year’s squad. Logan Schuss leads Ohio State with 14 goals and 21 points. Jesse King is second on the team with 12 goals and tied for second with 18 points. Carter Brown also has 18 points and leads Ohio State with 10 assists. Trey Wilkes is winning 61.4 percent of his faceoffs and Greg Dutton is saving 48.7 percent of shots inside the cage and is posting a 7.97 goals against average.
Next on the docket for UVa is a meeting with No. 4 Johns Hopkins on March 23 in the Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium. The annual battle for the Doyle Smith Cup commences at 4:30 p.m.
