No. 9 Virginia Topples Tribe, 18-5

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia women’s lacrosse team snapped a four-game losing streak with a decisive 18-5 victory over William & Mary Wednesday night (March 13) at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville.
William & Mary scored the first goal of the game just over a minute into the contest. After goals from Dana Boyle and Casey Bocklet gave Virginia a 2-1 lead, the Tribe knotted the game, 2-2, on a goal from Taelor Salmon with 19:39 left in the first half.
Virginia then scored seven-straight goals to take a dominant 9-2 lead.
The Cavaliers led 10-3 at the intermission and outscored the Tribe 8-2 in the second half. Virginia took 37 shots in the game to William & Mary’s 18.
Virginia dominated offensive possessions in the first half, winning 11 draw controls to William & Mary’s three. In the second half, the draws were 6-5, but Virginia forced six Tribe turnovers while only turning the ball over once.
“I think we were excited for this game and ready to be back home,” said Virginia head coach Julie Myers. “We had a couple of great days of practice. Being on Spring Break really helped us fine-tune the details of how to play well. We were able to start tonight and come from behind after they scored that first goal. We got better organized throughout the game. I thought our attackers did a great job of getting their hands free and hitting some really nice shots.”
Courtney Swan won five draw controls, had one caused-turnover, and picked up three ground balls. Swan was also a force on the offensive end, scoring four goals.
Bocklet paced the attack, scoring five goals and adding an assist. Boyle finished the game with her second hat trick of the season.
The Cavaliers used 28 different players in the game with five making their Virginia debuts including Taylor Ranftle who scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Ranftle also had a pair of caused turnovers.
“We were able to run though all of our sets and get almost everyone on our team some playing time tonight,” Myers said. “It was a real morale booster and a great opportunity to see what our entire team could do as opposed to just the 15 or 16 who have been playing.”
Kim Kolarik played the first half in goal, getting the win while allowing three goals and making two saves. Liz Colgan played the second half, making her first saves of the season, Colgan finished with two goals allowed and five saves in 30 minutes.
The Cavaliers host Princeton on Saturday, March 16 at 12 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium. The Princeton game is part of a doubleheader with the UVa men’s lacrosse team. The Cavalier men will be taking on Ohio State at 3 p.m. following the conclusion of the women’s game.
