Huey/Janowicz Edged by Bryans in Indian Wells Final

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Virginia alumnus Treat Huey (Class of 2008) came just shy of his second career ATP doubles title as he and partner Jerzy Janowicz fell to the No. 1 team in the world, Bob and Mike Bryan, 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 in the final of the BNP Paribas Open Saturday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. It was Huey’s fifth career ATP doubles final and first in a ATP Masters 1000 series event.

Huey and Janowicz were teaming for the first time in their careers. Huey is currently ranked No. 36 in the world in doubles, while Janowicz is No. 24 in the world in singles.

With the result in Indian Wells, Huey will move into the top 30 of the ATP Doubles Rankings next week, becoming the first Cavalier to accomplish the feat.

Huey and Janowicz opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 first round win over Frank Moser and Victor Hanescu. In the second round they topped US Open Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Andy Murray and his brother, Jamie, 6-3, 7-5. They topped James Blake and Mardy Fish in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-2, before edging Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 7-5, 1-6, 12-10 in the semifinals.

Huey was not the only former Cavalier to have pro success this week. His regular doubles partner, Dominic Inglot (Class of 2009), has reached the final of the $125,000 Dallas Challenger with Eric Butorac. At the Futures Tour event in Calabasas, Calif., Sanam Singh (Class of 2011) has reached the singles and doubles final.
