Virginia-NC State Series
NC State holds a 112-68-1 edge in the all-time series against Virginia. The Wolfpack won two of three games last year against the Cavaliers in Raleigh; UVa won two of three games the prior year in Charlottesville. The teams have split the last 12 meetings over the past four years.

Starters Shine in First Month
Virginia’s starting pitchers have excelled over the first five weeks of the season. UVa’s starters own a 13-1 record and 2.16 ERA this year, while batters have hit just .245 against them, including only 20 extra-base hits. The Cavaliers racked up a streak of 42 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings which ran from Feb. 16-March 2.

Freshmen Playing Key Roles
Virginia has leaned heavily on its first-year players early this season, particularly on the mound. Twelve freshmen already have seen playing time – tied for seventh-most nationally and second among ACC teams (Clemson 13, Maryland 12). Tennessee leads the nation with 17 freshmen who have played this year.

Freshmen have accounted for 48.9 percent of the innings pitched this year (93 1/3 of 190 2/3 total). Joe McCarthy has started all 21 contests in the batting order.

Virginia Slows the Running Game
Virginia has shown the propensity to slow its opponents’ running game this year. Virginia has allowed just 11 stolen base attempts in 21 games, with seven successful steals. UVa pitchers also have picked off six baserunners. UVa allowed three stolen bases to Maryland, which entered with 44 steals in 12 games.

Virginia Among National Leaders in Runs
Entering the week, Virginia was tied for 13th nationally in runs scored. With 160 runs scored in 18 games (8.4/game), Virginia was eighth nationally in scoring. The Cavaliers rank among the nation’s top 20 in eight statistical categories on offense.

Up Next
Virginia returns home at 5 p.m. Wednesday to play Towson and then entertains Miami next weekend (March 28-30) for a three-game ACC series.
