CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team travels to College Park, Md., this weekend for an Atlantic Coast Conference three-game series at Maryland Saturday and Sunday (March 23-24). Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s single game are both slated for 1 p.m. starts.

The Cavaliers (12-12, 1-2 ACC) come into the series having won three consecutive games and two straight extra inning contests. In its last outing, UVa defeated George Washington, 2-1 in 10 innings, Wednesday night at The Park in Charlottesville. Sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled with the based loaded to bring home senior Taylor Williams (Woodbridge, Va.) and secure the Cavalier victory.

Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) is riding an 11-game hitting streak and leads the team with a .357 batting average and three home runs, while Harris and junior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) also have three home runs.

Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) is 9-7 with a 2.17 ERA and 144 strikeouts. She has 72 wins, which is tied for second and just two shy of Lisa Palmer’s record (74). Mitchell will break the UVa career complete games record with her next start-to-finish outing. She is also closing in on 1,000 career strikeouts (975 currently).

Maryland comes into its 2013 ACC opening weekend with a record of 11-16. Nikki Maier leads the Terps with a .310 batting average and six home runs. Kaitlyn Schmelser (5-7, 3.80 ERA) and Maddie Martin (4-7, 3.84) share the majority of the pitching load for Maryland.

Up next, the Cavaliers host Boston College in an ACC series March 29-30 at The Park. Friday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start, while Saturday’s single game is set for noon.
