CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (5-5, 0-3 ACC) heads to Norfolk, Va. to take on Old Dominion (3-6, 1-0 CAA) on Wednesday, March 27 at 7 p.m.
The game will be Virginia’s third-straight Wednesday game against a Colonial Athletic Association team. UVa has defeated William & Mary (18-5) and No. 19 James Madison (10-3). Since 2010, the Cavaliers are 11-2 against CAA teams, with both losses coming at the hands of James Madison. ODU is 0-1 this season against ACC teams, falling 16-8 at Virginia Tech last Saturday (March 23).
The Lady Monarchs are just the third Cavalier opponent this season that is neither ranked nor receiving votes in either the deBeer /Inside Lacrosse media poll or the IWLCA poll. Since 2010, Virginia is 22-1 against unranked opponents with its only loss being a 10-9 setback last season at Virginia Tech.
Virginia is the second ranked opponent that ODU has faced this season. They lost 20-10 at No. 19 Johns Hopkins to start the season.
Virginia slipped to No. 10 in this week’s deBeer/Inside Lacrosse media poll but held steady at No. 9 in the IWLCA coaches’ poll.
Virginia leads the all-time series against Old Dominion, 35-1. The only loss was on April 1, 2009 when ODU stunned No. 9 Virginia, 13-10 in Norfolk.
Virginia has won three of its last four games, including the victory over No. 19 James Madison, while ODU is looking to snap a two-game skid.
Virginia has won the battle of draw controls in all but two games this season, with the Cavaliers overall winning 128 draws to opponents’ 94. Courtney Swan (So., Vero Beach, Fla.) is third in the ACC, averaging 3.9 draw controls per game. Swan ranks 34th in the NCAA national rankings for draw controls. In the last six games, she is averaging 4.83 per game. Morgan Stephens (So., Olney, Md.) is second on the team with 26 draw controls (2.6 per game)
On attack, Casey Bocklet (So., South Salem, N.Y.) is now the only Cavalier player to have scored at least one goal in every game this season. Bocklet is ranked fourth in the ACC in points per game (3.8) and 36th in the NCAA. Bocklet is also ranked fifth in the ACC in assists per game (1.2) and seventh in goals per game (2.6).
Stephens scored in each of the first nine games, but did not score a goal against Duke. She did have an assist against the Blue Devils and has scored a goal or had an assist in every game this season.
Ashlee Warner (Jr., Corning, N.Y.) has also scored a goal or had an assist in every game this season. Warner is 11th in the ACC in points per game (3.0) and eighth in assists per game (1.1).
The Cavaliers have three players in the top-10 in shots per game: Bocklet (5th, 5.6), Dana Boyle (Jr., Londonderry, N.H.) (7th, 5.1) and Stephens (T-10th, 4.4).
Christie Donovan (Jr., Hingham, Mass.) became the 12th different Cavalier to score this season with her goal 41 seconds into the Duke game.
Virginia has two games remaining on its current three-game road trip. The Cavaliers will travel to Boston College for a game on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m. before playing on Tuesday, April 2 at American at 4 p.m.
The Cavaliers close out the regular-season with three home games against Northwestern (April 7), Johns Hopkins (April 11) and Virginia Tech (April 17)
Single-game tickets to Virginia lacrosse games are $8 (adult general admission) and $6 (youth, senior, faculty/staff general admission). Tickets may be ordered in person at Bryant Hall with a major credit card, by phone at (800) 542-8821 or online. Advance ticket sales end three hours prior to the game. Tickets are also available on game day at the Klöckner Stadium ticket windows, subject to availability, beginning one hour prior to the game.
