CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Cavaliers (5-4, 0-0 ACC) open up ACC play on Saturday when they entertain the Maryland Terrapins (6-1, 1-1 ACC) inside Klöckner Stadium. UVa is ranked No. 17 this week in the USILA coaches and No. 15 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media polls, while the Terrapins are ranked No. 2 in the nation by both the USILA coaches and Nike/Inside Lacrosse media polls. Faceoff is set for 2 p.m. and live stats will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
Gates open at 12 p.m. and free parking will be available at University Hall and John Paul Jones parking lots. The Emmet/Ivy Garage will also be available for free to fans attending the men’s lacrosse game at 2 p.m. and the UVa baseball game against Miami at 1 p.m.
There will be a live radio broadcast in the Charlottesville area on WINA 1070 AM, which will be simulcast as an audio webcast for a subscription cost on VirginiaSports.com through Cavaliers Live. John Freeman will bring the play-by-play, Doug Tarring will provide the game analysis and Jack Bird will roam the sidelines. ESPNU will televise the game live in HD with Eamon McAnaney bringing the play-by-play, Quint Kessenich adding color analysis and Paul Carcaterra reporting from the sideline. There will be a web simulcast on ESPN3.
Saturday’s contest will be the Cavaliers and Terrapins first meeting inside Klöckner Stadium since the historic 2009 seven overtime game, the longest DI game ever and at the time the longest collegiate lacrosse game regardless of Division. 2013 marks the 65th-straight season the Cavaliers and the Terrapins have clashed in a series that began in 1926. Maryland holds the all-time advantage with a 45-43 mark, however Virginia has won 11 of the last 13 meetings, including the 2011 NCAA title game, 9-7, at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium. Virginia’s 88 previous meetings against Maryland equal the most games the Cavaliers have played against in their history. The 86 all-time meetings with Johns Hopkins is the only series for UVa that is even close to the frequency of the Maryland series.
Nick O’Reilly leads UVa with 18 assists and 33 points, while Mark Cockerton is No. 3 in the nation with 27 goals. Matt White and Rob Emery round out UVa’s top goal scorers with 15 and 14, respectively. Scott McWilliams is No. 1 in the nation with 25 caused turnovers and has 30 ground balls. UVa has two options in goal with Rhody Heller and Dan Marino. Heller, who started the last two games, is saving 47.8 percent of shots against him and has a 12.38 goals against average. Marino has posted a 9.12 goals against average and has saved 45.0 percent of shots in between the pipes.
Maryland head coach John Tillman is in his third season after a successful three-year run at Harvard and returns 38 letterwinners and five starters off last season’s national runner-up squad. The Terrapins sit at No. 2 in the media poll and coaches poll. Kevin Cooper leads Maryland with 14 goals and 12 assists for 26 points. Five other Terrapins are registering double figures in goals, with Jake Bernhardt, Jay Carlson and Owen Blye all tallying 12 goals so far on the season. Charlie Raffa is winning 58.5 percent (72-of-123) of his faceoffs and Niko Amato is saving 58.7 percent of shots inside the cage and posting a 7.10 goals against average.
The ACC slate continues for Virginia on April 6 when North Carolina comes to Charlottesville. The contest will commence at 3:30 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium and will be video streamed on ESPN3.
