Cavaliers Blank Hokies 7-0 for 14th Straight Victory

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The top-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team concluded its three-match homestand Thursday with a 7-0 win over No. 54 Virginia Tech at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers (14-0, 3-0) won their 96th consecutive match against ACC competition, while the Hokies fell to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in the ACC.
“We want to keep getting better as a team,” said head coach Brian Boland. “It is important to focus at every position and these matches are good chances to do that. We want to win as a team, but also realize that every match is equally important, no matter what the team score is at that point. This is the regular season and there is an opportunity to keep developing. Each player needs to realize that everything they do on the court through the course of competition will have an impact on where we are as a team come May. That is our focus and so far we have done a great job with that.”
Virginia opened the match by winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) and Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) topped Amerigo Contini and Andreas Bjerrehus 8-4 at the No. 1 spot to give UVa the early edge. Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) clinched the point with their 9-7 win at No. 2 over Hunter Koontz and Lucas Oliveira. Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and Julen Uriguen(Guatemala City, Guatemala) completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over Trpimir Kujundzic and Marko Lovrinovic.
In singles, the Cavaliers won five of the six first sets to take control of the match. They won four of those matches in straight sets to extend their lead to 5-0. Domijan cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Oliveira at No. 3, followed by Shane’s 7-5, 6-1 victory at No. 5 over Kujundzic. Frank sealed the win as he downed Bjerrehus 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 and Styslinger added a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 over Koontz.
The final two matches went to a decisive third set. At No. 6, Uriguen scored a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Joao Monteiro. At No. 1, Jenkins rallied from down a set and 5-2 in the second set to win 11 straight games for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory over Contini to preserve the shutout.
Virginia opens a three-match road trip on Saturday as it visits Boston College.
