CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team travels to Tallahassee, Fla., April 14-15 for a three-game series against Atlantic Coast Conference rival and 25th-ranked Florida State. Sunday’s doubleheader is scheduled for 10 a.m., while Monday’s single game is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPNU.

Last time out, the Cavaliers (18-19, 3-9 ACC) swept Delaware State, 9-1 and 10-1, Wednesday (April 10) at The Park in Charlottesville. Virginia’s bats exploded for five runs in the second inning of the first game and seven runs in the third inning of the second game to break open the contests.

Against Boston College on March 30, senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) became the first Cavalier and seventh ACC pitcher to record 1,000 career strikeouts. In the same game, Mitchell earned her 74th career win, tying her with Lisa Palmer (1986-89) for the most in UVa history and setting up for her record-breaking win April 3 against GMU.

Mitchell now holds the Virginia career records in wins (76), strikeouts (1,033), complete games (110), innings pitched (886.0), starts (136) and appearances (152). Against Delaware State, Mitchell became the first UVa pitcher to record four 200-strikeout seasons. She has 202 K’s this year.

Following last weekend’s games, junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) ranked as the 14th-toughest batter to strikeout in the nation, averaging 35.7 at-bats between strikeouts. Going into the week, Mitchell ranked 11th in the nation and second in the conference with 194 strikeouts.

The Seminoles (31-14, 10-2 ACC) come into the weekend on the heels of a 4-0 loss at South Alabama after sweeping Boston College in a three-game series last weekend.

Courtney Senas leads FSU with a .379 batting average, 13 home runs and 50 RBI, while Kelly Hensley is hitting .339 with 11 home runs and 45 RBI. In the pitching circle, Florida State is led by Lacey Waldrop (16-7, 1.68 ERA) and Monica Perry (14-7, 1.97).

Last year, the Seminoles swept a three-game series at The Park March 24-25, 2012, 5-0, 2-0 and 3-1.

Next up, the Cavaliers host NC State for a three-game series April 20-21 at The Park. Saturday’s doubleheader and Sunday’s single game are slated for 1 p.m. starts.
